柯南·道爾
一共寫了四篇長篇、56篇短篇的福爾摩斯系列小說。
最早先的兩篇分別是1887年畢頓聖誕年刊（Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887）的《血字的研究》（A Study
in Scarlet）
以及1890年理本科特月刊（Lippincott's Monthly Magazine）登出的《四個簽名》（The Sign of the Four）。
1891年開始在The Strand雜誌上的一系列短篇小說連載，使福爾摩斯的受歡迎程度爆炸性的水漲船高。
直到1927年，柯南·道爾先生才再寫出續集。故事的發生年代大約集中在1875~1907年。
最後一案發生在1914年。
絕大多數的故事，是以福爾摩斯的朋友及傳記作家約翰·H·華生醫師的角度敘述的。只有兩篇是由福爾摩斯親自敘述、兩篇是由第三人稱角度撰寫。
柯南·道爾表示，他寫作福爾摩斯系列小說的靈感，是來自他在愛丁堡皇家醫院當見習醫師時的指導老師
約瑟夫·貝爾醫師。此人和福爾摩斯一樣，向來喜歡從看來不相關的細微觀察導出驚人的結論。
